Trench coat love

Thanks to a fellow Pattern Review member, I was able to find the ever elusive Patrones magazine during my trip to Germany last month. This is Issue 284, the fall Extra issue.

Since my back issues of Patrones Extra have included maternity patterns, I was disappointed that this issue had none.  (Apparently maternity patterns are increasingly unpopular - in 2009, Burda magazine also ditched their once-a-year, throw a bone to the pregnant ladies, handful of maternity patterns they typically published in their August issue. Not to mention that the maternity patterns from the Big 4 are all leftovers from the 1990s or out of print. I actually have a whole maternity pattern rant post in draft mode that I'm sitting on...).

Anyway, as Melissa shared with us, Patrones has dropped the designer names from their patterns, but the clothes and the photoshoots are as fashiony as they always were.  Issue 284 has a collection of not-your-typical trench coats (including the coat on the cover) that I think really stand out.

Here, a big ruffle adds pizazz to an otherwise straightforward & simple coat.

I lied, this one is a pretty typical trench coat, but desirable nonetheless.

This one's all drapey and doesn't seem to have any closures (unless there's a hidden snap at the waist), hence the need for a RTW belt. Looks like a great layering piece.

This one's my fave. It has a hood! I loooove hoods on jackets and coats - when you live in a city that has as many impromptu gentle rain showers as Seattle, having a hood is golden. I examined the line drawing and the pattern pieces for this one and I so don't know what's going on... This one could be a future Big Project, but don't hold your breath.

---------------
I do have a new BWOF top done, just need to take some pics, so that'll be making an appearance here soon. I've also been tracing Patrones and Burda patterns like crazy. Let's see if I can crank any of those out during the upcoming 3-day weekend.

I made 2 maternity dresses from my favorite Burda t-shirt pattern (8998).

All I did was pivot the back to give me a little extra width and cut off the front just below the bust. Then I cut the lower front 6-10" wider than the original pattern and made a CF box pleat and 2 side pleats.

The dresses were comfy and looked better than most dresses I found RTW.

There are some nice maternity patterns in one of the 09 issues of Burda World of Fashion. I wish I could buy Patrones in Australia. No such luck.

Actually take a look at http://japancouture.canalblog.com The French (who as you may know brag about being the best breeders left in Europe :-)) have been having good success with using most of the cute Japanese dresses and tunics as is for maternity wear. You could certainly do worse style-wise, and in the northwest you should be able to get your hands on Japanese pattern books without too much trouble.
Which doesn't mean that we wouldn't like to read your rant, but just keep in mind it'd apply just as well if you were very tall, or very small, or very large, or disabled, or...

Yeah - not too long ago there was a maternity thing in BWOF and one of them was a coat. It was leather I think but could be done out of something else.

Have you looked at the Burda envelope patterns? They have some cute maternity patterns. I used several of them to made garments for a family member earlier this year. One is a really great fiting pant, capri pattern. One of the knit tops actually has slight gathering in the front side seam and so the side seams don't distort as your tummy expands.

Trena got me this issue when she went to Spain in the fall. I lurv it. I've been wanting to muslin the trench with the ruffles. Maybe I will too this weekend. We're furloughed tomorrow so it's a four day weekend for me!

I didn't know that BWOF used to have maternity patterns. It's a shame. I agree, maternity patterns from the big 4 are terrible. I'm contemplating getting a stash of vintage maternity patterns for my next pregnancy...maybe I'll try to find some old Burdas too.

That's one of the issues I picked up in Spain and I am so into that ruffle trench.

You may want to check KwikSew and Burda to see if they have any stylish maternity garments.

this has nothing to do with trench coats, but you should check http://megannielsen.com/. She is currently 7? months along and makes her own maternity clothes.

Christina,
if I have not yet congratulated you let me do it now, GONGRATS!!! and hugs from me.

The last trench on the line is from Marithe et Francois Girbaud, they make very nice stuff. I wasn't too glad about them dropping off the designer names but we can live with that can't we?

.... and besides there's sometimes stuff in them that we can identify even without names put up:).

Oh, I so feel your aggravation on the maternity stuff. I felt the same irritation some 10 years ago when I was preggers. I admire the ladies of today who take the regular patterns and alter them! Good luck in your search...and I looove the trench coats!!

I love the trench look but I'm only 5'0" and I can't face the shortening process!

Have you looked at Ottobre design from maternity? They do an Ottobre Woman issue with maternity pieces once a year I think.

I'm with you on the dearth of good maternity patterns, but there are so many non maternity patterns that just need the slightest tweaking to work for a growing belly. I can't wait to see what you come up with

If you have the strength to trace any more Patrones, I'm sure that some of my back issues have maternity patterns in and I'd be glad to send them out for you to trace.

BWOF used to do really cute maternity wear - I used to look at some of them and wonder if I could un-maternity them. I don't understand their changes in format.

And add me to the list of LOVING that ruffled trench.

Oh, the trench with the ruffles down the front is killing me!
