I just found an interesting WSJ article on apparel construction and fashion copies via the Pattern Review message boards. When you have a few moments, check it out and be sure to watch the video (3 minutes long).
One of the guys in the video talks about a Lanvin dress with leg of mutton sleeves; that reminded me of a really great online resource, vintagesewing.info - this excerpt from the 1942 book, Modern Pattern Design, shows how to draft leg of mutton sleeves.

ooh I ADORE that book! I managed to snag a hardcover edition of it off abebooks.com a year or two ago and it's still the most useful sewing book I own. I'm willing to forgive its trouser section being limited to only "sportswear" because of the date and just how damned useful it is in showing exactly how to take a plain pattern and spruce it up with tons of interesting alterations.
And coincidentally, I've used that leg of mutton sleeve alteration from hat book before (in a fab jacket that sadly, is about 4 sizes too big for me and would take weeks to downsize). :)
I also own the Modern Pattern Design book! It's a great reference (as for all the vintageinfo.com site)!
