The Smart tour has just touched base in Seattle, so this afternoon my husband and I went to test drive the Smart Car. Smart cars have been filling up major cities all over the world for the past 10 years, and finally in 2008 they will be made available in the US through Daimler/Mercedes.
They are short enough lengthwise that you can park head in on streets where other cars are parallel parked. There's seating for two people, plus cargo room for ~5 grocery bags. And it gets upwards of 50mpg. Essentially, it's the perfect car for childless people making lots of short trips in a city where parking is scarce (Seattle).
We are a one-car household now, which I like, but we are seriously considering this little roadster. Tim would use it to commute to work as I would still take the bus. I'll let you know if that happens.

Chortle. When I first saw one in 2004 in Germany and I took a photo where my arms almost spanned it back to front. I do think it's cool you are a one car house. I've heard that Portland and Seattle have awesome mass transit systems.
I want one!
Most of my car trips are 10 minutes or less. I should ride a bike, but I hate biking through traffic, and the bus takes 45 minutes for a 10-minute car trip. If the price is affordable, I might consider one of these!
I test drove one when it came through the SF area! I think they're cute, but I have no use for them as I live in the suburbs. I almost wish I had a reason to get one..
